Lake Baikal

Lake Baikal Main Image

Overview

Lake Baikal, located in Siberia, is a natural wonder of incredible proportions. It contains 20% of the world's unfrozen freshwater and is home to thousands of species found nowhere else on Earth, including the Baikal seal (nerpa). The lake's surroundings are equally impressive, with the Barguzin Mountains and the mysterious Olkhon Island. In winter, the lake freezes so solidly that cars can drive across it, revealing stunning ice formations, deep cracks, and trapped methane bubbles that look like pearls frozen in time.

When to Visit

Lake Baikal offers two distinct peak seasons with very different appeals:

Summer (July – August)

The warmest months, ideal for hiking the Great Baikal Trail, boat trips, and swimming (for the brave!).

Winter (February – March)

The prime time to experience 'Baikal Ice.' The lake is completely frozen, offering incredible photography opportunities and the chance to walk or drive on the crystal-clear surface.

Special Events and Festivals

  • Baikal Ice Marathon (March) – A challenging run across the frozen surface of the lake.
  • Winteriada (February/March) – An annual festival of winter games and cultural events.
  • Olkhon Ice Fest (February) – A festival of ice sculpture on Olkhon Island.
  • Day of the Baikal Seal (May) – A celebration dedicated to the lake's most famous inhabitant.
